How To Wash A Bike Helmet

2022 05/11

Helmets, like our bicycles and jerseys, are always damaged by the hot sun, dust and rain when they are used. And the helmet lining is in direct contact with our head, especially the forehead, which absorbs a lot of sweat every day. But I found that the riders around me, in the process of daily maintenance, the most important thing is the car, and the least important thing is the helmet.

This good partner who shoulders a huge mission and protects our lives also needs to be taken care of, right?

So in daily use, how to clean and maintain our helmets?

About replacement
1. Due to the particularity of the helmet being "suitable for one impact", the helmet should be replaced after a severe impact. There are two situations here, one is that the helmet is cracked or smashed, it is undoubtedly sacrificed, and a new helmet is needed. The other is that the helmet has suffered a strong impact, but the appearance still looks normal. In this case, the helmet should also be replaced, because the inside of the helmet may have been cracked. If you continue to use it, there is a great security risk.

2. If you have not been hit for a long time, it does not mean that your helmet can be used once and for all. Helmets, like everything we use in our daily lives, age with time and exposure to the sun. Under normal use without impact, it is recommended to replace the helmet with a new one every three years (if the frequency of use is high, it is recommended to shorten the replacement cycle).

About cleaning
Many riders pay little attention to the cleaning of the helmet. In fact, the helmet is really the kindest and least hypocritical of all our equipment. Not only does it play an important role in protecting life, but it is also easy to use and easy to clean. Compared to your car, cleaning it is as easy as brushing the dishes or washing a few socks.

1. Clean the shell. Because the outside of the helmet is exposed to the air for a long time during riding, there will be a lot of dust, oil and other dirt on it, which will slowly make the helmet look less shiny or scratched. In fact, you just need to scrub regularly.

Get a mild lotion, a soft-bristled toothbrush or sponge, and a regular dry towel ready to start scrubbing. Dishwashing detergent is a good choice. You can add half of the pool to the sink and add water prepared with detergent. Remember to use cold water (room temperature tap water). Immerse the helmet directly and soak it, use a toothbrush to gently brush the shell and holes and other places that can be brushed, then rinse off the lotion with water, and dry it with a dry towel.

You can even take a shower with your helmet on after your daily ride. Let the helmet bathe with you, rinse it off first, then wash yourself, and the helmet will feel refreshed too.

After a while, you can also rub the helmet shell with water wax to make it look cleaner and shiny.

2. Clean the buckle. The buckle is in direct contact with the skin of our face every day. It absorbs a lot of sweat, as well as dust and bacteria. If it is not cleaned in time, the dirty buckle will continue to be attached to our face next time, which is not only unsanitary, but also very easy to breed bacteria and generate odor. When cleaning the helmet with a toothbrush or sponge, remember to apply lotion and clean the buckle on both sides. It can be cleaned with more lotion.

3. Clean the lining. After brushing the shell and buckle, you can gently remove the helmet lining, put it in the sink for a little soaking, and then gently rub it and wash it by hand. The inner lining is a major source of helmet odor. If sweat stays in it for a long time, it will not only stink, but also cause damage to the material of the pad.

About storage
After washing the helmet, put it in a ventilated and cool place to dry, and remember to store it in a place where there is no wind and sun on days when you are not riding. Don't just throw it away and leave it alone. For example, put it in the back seat of the car. If the car is parked in the sun for a long time, the helmet will also be wronged in it. It is best to put it in a dry cabinet.

The cleaning and maintenance of the helmet is relatively simple, but it will be very fresh after washing. After all, it is something that is worn on our head. It is recommended to simply wash it after every ride. Let our helmets be like our clothes, fragrant every day~
